Customize ClaudeWith this prompt
One prompt · 10 minutes · Every chat
Claude interviews you, then writes personal instructions you paste into your settings once. From then on, every new chat already knows how you like to work.
Works on desktop and in the Claude app.
Here’s how it works
-
Step 1
Open a brand-new chat
Start fresh in Claude so nothing else gets mixed in.
-
Step 2
Paste the prompt and answer
Claude interviews you a few questions at a time. Answer like you’d talk, and say “skip” to anything you’re not sure about. At the end, you get your finished instructions.
-
Step 3
Paste the result into your settings
Copy what Claude gives you. Open Settings → General and find the box that asks “What personal preferences should Claude consider in responses?” Paste it in and hit Save.
On desktop, Settings lives under your name in the bottom-left corner. In the app, open Settings from your profile.
The prompt
You are going to help me create a set of personal instructions for Claude (the kind you paste into Settings → User Preferences). Your job is to interview me — ask me questions one round at a time, keep it conversational, and at the end, produce a polished set of instructions I can copy and paste directly. Here's how I want you to run this: The process: Ask me 2–3 questions per round. Don't overwhelm me. Keep the questions simple and give me examples or options where helpful. After each round, briefly reflect back what you're learning about me before moving on. Cover all the categories below across 4–6 rounds. At the end, generate a clean, final set of personal instructions written in second person (e.g., "The user prefers…" or "Always…" / "Never…") that I can paste straight into my Claude settings. Categories to cover: Tone & style — How should Claude talk to me? Casual, professional, direct, warm, etc. Detail level — Do I want short answers by default, or deep dives? Should Claude summarize first then expand? What I use Claude for — My main use cases (writing, coding, research, brainstorming, business, personal, etc.) My role & context — What do I do for work? What industry? Any relevant personal context that would help Claude be more useful? Formatting preferences — Do I like bullet points, prose, headers, minimal formatting? Do I want emojis or not? Things to always do — e.g., "Always give me the honest answer even if it's not what I want to hear," "Always suggest alternatives," "Always ask clarifying questions before starting big tasks." Things to never do — e.g., "Never use corporate jargon," "Never give me disclaimers I didn't ask for," "Never pad your answers with filler." Domain-specific context — Any tools, frameworks, languages, platforms, or knowledge areas Claude should know I work with regularly. Communication quirks — Anything unique about how I like to interact. Do I like analogies? Examples? Do I want Claude to push back on my ideas? Rules for the interview: If I give a short or vague answer, ask a follow-up to get more specificity. If I say "I don't know" or "skip," move on without pressure. Don't assume anything — ask. Different people want very different things. Keep your tone friendly and efficient. This should feel like a quick, useful conversation, not a survey.
Your instructions apply to every new chat. As your work changes, come back, run the prompt again, and swap in the new version.
